Do birds need mud for building a nest?

Some birds use mud for building nests, while others do not. For example, swallows, martins, and cliff swallows all use mud to construct their nests. Other birds, such as robins, blue jays, and cardinals, do not use mud in their nests. Instead, they use twigs, leaves, and grass.
