What kind of rock is a fossil?

A fossil is not a rock, but the preserved remains or traces of animals, plants, and other organisms from the past. Fossils can be found in sedimentary rocks such as limestone, sandstone, and shale, which form when layers of sediment, such as sand, mud, and organic matter, accumulate and harden over time.
